The Kalabria Coast to Coast trail links the Ionian Sea with the Tyrrhenian Sea. The multi-day route runs from Soverato to Pizzo Calabro and reveals a side of Calabria many travellers never see: quiet villages, ancient olive groves, deep forests and wide views across mountains and coastlines.

The trail begins on Soverato’s seafront and gradually climbs inland through vineyards, fields and Mediterranean scenery. Small towns such as Petrizzi and San Vito sullo Ionio offer a glimpse of everyday life in Calabria’s hill villages.

As the route gains height, olive groves and prickly pears give way to chestnut and beech forests in the Serre Calabre. Shaded paths, granite rocks and the stillness of nature make this section especially memorable.

Monterosso Calabro – a special stage

Between the Serre mountains and the Lake Angitola valley lies Monterosso Calabro, one of the trail’s most distinctive stops.

The historic village rises above the surrounding landscape. In the evening warm light turns the houses and slopes red and gold; on clear days views stretch across inland Calabria and sometimes towards both coasts and Stromboli.

Narrow lanes and stairways pass old houses, stone portals and baroque churches. The Scala dei Leoni is one of the village’s best-known features.

The Filanda Massara, the museum of rural and craft culture, and traces of the former graphite mine tell the story of work, textile production and daily life in earlier generations.

For walkers, Monterosso is more than a point on the route. It is a place to slow down, recover and experience the sincere hospitality of inland Calabria.

From Lake Angitola to Pizzo

After Monterosso, the path descends towards the Lake Angitola oasis, an important nature and bird reserve.

Beyond the last hills the Tyrrhenian Sea comes into view. The finish is Pizzo Calabro, where the clifftop old town, Murat Castle, the sunset and the famous Tartufo di Pizzo bring the journey to an atmospheric close.
